The film “William Tells Tod am Morgarten” begins with the invocation of God, like the Federal Letter of 1291, to which it corresponds in many respects, but is written in German, not in Latin. One response to the Morgarten War is likely to be the prohibition of separate negotiations and agreements with common enemies. The alliance was invoked by Unterwalden in its entirety, thus also by the people of Obwalden, who are not mentioned in the treaty of 1291. For example Wilhelm Tell, who took part in the Battle of Morgarten with his sons, and Werner Stauffacher as the battle’s strategist.
It is true that the Glarus historian Egidius Tschudi had already described the Swiss “liberation history” in the middle of the 16th century. In addition to Wilhelm Tell, the Rütli and the castle quarry, he also reported on the events at the Morgarten. But it wasn’t until 1891 that the story of the Battle of Morgarten developed into a whole-Swiss picture of the heroic original Swiss who rebelled against oppressors in the form of the evil lords. According to the respective world situation (World War I and World War II, Cold War and bloc formation, EU and Eastern Enlargement), “Morgarten” became and continues to be emotionally different, but in a uniform line of motives it symbolizes the will to fight and bravery, the love of freedom, independence and resistance to foreign dictates.
